In Relation to What Connects Us (Táku Uŋkáikhoyaka

In Relation to What Connects Us (Táku Uŋkáikhoyakapi Kiŋ) Mural is now installed at Coffman Memorial Union on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.

Rather than creating another land acknowledgment, I wanted to create an opportunity for people to understand the land as a relative. Dakota teachings remind us that the land, rivers, plants, animals, and stars are all part of our extended family.

Centered on Bdóte, the sacred meeting of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers and the Dakota site of creation, the mural explores the relationships between land, sky, water, and all living beings. The Milky Way as the Spirit Road, the cottonwood tree, and the teaching of Kapémni ("what is above is reflected below") express the connections between the earthly and celestial worlds.

The mural also celebrates Dakota homelands through native plants, animal relatives, the Sacred Hoop, and community voices. During engagement activities, University of Minnesota students reflected on what connects us, and their responses were woven directly into the artwork.

To make these teachings more accessible, the mural description is presented in English, Dakota (translated by Dawi Westerman), and Braille.

My hope is that this mural encourages people to pause, see the campus through Dakota perspectives, and recognize that when we understand the land as a relative, we begin to care for it differently. #minnesota #minneapolis #visitsaintpaul

It was a pleasure to experience another mood of Wakpá Tháŋka, even with the raindrops, while sharing Dakota stories and honoring our relationship with the land, water, and sky.

Honored to design the poster for my tribe's summer wacipi (powwow) this year!

July is one of the most beautiful times to visit the Spirit Lake Dakota Nation in North Dakota. Beyond the celebration, you can spend time fishing, explore the oak savannah prairie, and visit the buffalo, elk herd and prairie dog town at White Horse Hill National Game Preserve.

"The Rivers Remember Us"

In 2024, I stood at Cahokia during the solar eclipse, surrounded by people of all different backgrounds who came to witness that moment. At a site shaped by Indigenous knowledge, we gathered again under the same sky. It was a reminder that these places still hold power, and that people continue to be drawn to them.

The river is a living system of memory. It connects mound cities like Cahokia to the present, carrying stories, relationships, and decisions forward through time. In Dakota understanding, what is above is reflected below. The stars, the water, and the land exist in relationship, and through that relationship, we continue to find our place.

This work comes from time spent traveling to burial and effigy mound sites across the Mississippi River valley, places where my direct ancestors once lived, gathered and were laid to rest. In these spaces, history is not behind us. It is still present, held in the land and carried through the water.

As I've traveled, I've been thinking about what it means to make decisions for peace for the generations that come after us. These sites ask us to move with care, to listen and to choose better where we can.

"The Rivers Remember Us" reflects that continuum. The eclipse speaks to cycles and transformation, while the life within the water carries memory forward. Past, present, and future are not separate, but flowing through one another. The choices we make now will continue on, just like the river.

Between Makhóšiča and Ȟesápa (Badlands and the Bla

Between Makhóšiča and Ȟesápa (Badlands and the Black Hills of South Dakota), I found myself returning to two teachings: Wóinina and Wóabdeza.

To silently observe. To eventually understand.

The stone, the wind, the shifting light across the hills. The feeling that the land is carrying memories older than any one lifetime.

Creativity often asks us to search for something new, but these places remind me to simply become quiet enough to notice what has always been there.

What comes next will reveal itself in time...

Had a great time at the grand opening of the new Chatku Arts Center @chatku.artscenter on Pine Ridge. Art has always held a place of honor among the Lakota and Dakota people, and it's inspiring to see a space like this being created to support artists and benefit future generations.

I began my journey as a Native artist with the guidance and support of many Lakota artists who shared their knowledge, invited me into projects, and helped open doors along the way. I have the highest respect for these friends, mentors, and colleagues.

This year's Red Cloud Art Show is especially beautiful and, in my opinion, one of the strongest Native art exhibitions on view today. If you have the opportunity to see it, don't miss it.

I bought a glass piece by one of my favorite artists @angelababbystudio . I've been a fan for so long and I can't wait to have her art in my home!

Today was the perfect day for the Yaŋpá Spring Win

Today was the perfect day for the Yaŋpá Spring Wind Celebration!

I forgot to take many photos because I was too busy enjoying the good energy and spending time with everyone. Wopida to all of our relatives who came and shared their teachings, stories and creativity with the community. It was wonderful to see people of all ages learning, creating and connecting throughout the day.

I also loved seeing the first signs of our Three Sisters Garden emerging. Uŋčí Makhá (Grandmother Earth) is so powerful. Every seed carries a story of possibility and it is always amazing to witness how the earth transforms something so small into new life 🌱🌽🫘✨
