Had a great time at the grand opening of the new Chatku Arts Center @chatku.artscenter on Pine Ridge. Art has always held a place of honor among the Lakota and Dakota people, and it's inspiring to see a space like this being created to support artists and benefit future generations.

I began my journey as a Native artist with the guidance and support of many Lakota artists who shared their knowledge, invited me into projects, and helped open doors along the way. I have the highest respect for these friends, mentors, and colleagues.

This year's Red Cloud Art Show is especially beautiful and, in my opinion, one of the strongest Native art exhibitions on view today. If you have the opportunity to see it, don't miss it.

I bought a glass piece by one of my favorite artists @angelababbystudio . I've been a fan for so long and I can't wait to have her art in my home!

Today was the perfect day for the Yaŋpá Spring Wind Celebration!

I forgot to take many photos because I was too busy enjoying the good energy and spending time with everyone. Wopida to all of our relatives who came and shared their teachings, stories and creativity with the community. It was wonderful to see people of all ages learning, creating and connecting throughout the day.

I also loved seeing the first signs of our Three Sisters Garden emerging. Uŋčí Makhá (Grandmother Earth) is so powerful. Every seed carries a story of possibility and it is always amazing to witness how the earth transforms something so small into new life 🌱🌽🫘✨

I always leave our conversations feeling inspired by the many ways we each use public art to uplift communities, strengthen connections and transform the places we call home

Join artists Marlena Myles and Tanáǧidaŋ Tó Wiŋ, alongside special guests, for a powerful gathering that blends Dakota ancestral teachings with modern Indigenous expression.

Wopida to everyone who joined us today and put their energy into tending the Four Winds garden at Battle Creek Regional Park here in Imnizaska (Saint Paul).

Dakota women once planted their gardens here near the village of Kaposia: it feels amazing to be sharing the space with their energy that lingers here.

We will have more garden events in the future, an announcement coming soon! In the meantime, we're excited to see the little seeds we planted today do their thing (especially the bean lodges! 🫘🫛) ! 🌱🌼

I had so much fun listening, learning while creating the illustrations for the new podcast Tending Our Roots with Indigenous Methodologies. 🌱🎙️ The first episodes are out! Podcast link in @johnshopkinscih bio

This 10-episode series explores Indigenous methodologies in research, evaluation, community care, language, identity, and ways of being through conversations with Indigenous knowledge keepers, artists, educators, and leaders. As an illustrator, it's been inspiring to visually respond to these conversations while learning from each guest's experiences and teachings.

So far, the episodes include:

• Michael “Migizi” Sullivan Sr. — Speaking our Indigenous languages fearlessly, joyfully, and as living ceremony.

• Sharon Day — Listening to water as a living relative through prayer, walking, and care for all life.

• Amáyá Scott — Choosing joy and self-love while embracing Indigenous queer and trans identity in the modern world.

There are still many more powerful conversations to come throughout the season and I'm excited to continue sharing the artwork inspired by them.

Hosted by Dr. Miigis Gonzalez (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe) and Dr. Jill Fish (Tuscarora Nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy), Tending Our Roots is creating an important living resource centered on Indigenous knowledge systems, healing, and futures.

Blue Hummingbird Woman and I welcome everyone out

Blue Hummingbird Woman and I welcome everyone out for a day of learning about Dakota plants in our Four Winds Garden at Battle Creek Park, this Saturday!

During Wozupi Wi (Planting Moon), we'll gather to learn about the Dakota teachings of the Three Sisters, plant together, and reset our bean lodges for the growing season.

Last year, we worked to transform an old abandoned playground into a garden for our Native plant relatives. Since then, we've watched plant relatives, pollinators, mice, frogs, deer and even an owl return. It's been beautiful to witness how quickly life comes back when we care for the land in a good way.
