Marlena is a self-taught digital artist located in St. Paul, Minnesota. She uses her art to celebrate her Indigenous culture and language (Spirit Lake Dakota, Mohegan. Creek). She is the illustrator of Thanku: Poems of Gratitude and is currently creating her first Dakota culture coloring book, to be published early 2021.

Alutiiq (Aleut) people would traditionally build temporary stockpiles on rocky, cliff-bound islands to protect their families from raiders. The most famous of these types refuges is connected to a dark history known as the Massacre at Refuge Rock, Awa’uq (literally translated as Numb).

In the mid-1700s, Russian fur traders (known as Promyshlenniki) fought for a foothold in the Aleutian and Kodiak islands against the Indigenous people. In 1784, trader Grigori Shelikhov and his Shelikhov-Golikov Company moved to end the impasse with the Native people and impose Russian will by force. Taking refuge at Awa’uq, as many as 3000 Alutiiq men, women and children were slaughtered, with stories of women jumping to their deaths rather than be taken hostage. The Russians suffered no casualities during the massacre.

All the surviving Alutiiq men were forced into slavery, becoming hunters and mercenaries that served the Russian fur traders. The women and children would become hostages and taken to Three Saints Bay on Kodiak Island, which was the first permanent Russian settlement in Alaska, founded by Shelikhov in August of 1784. As a result of the massacre, the Alutiiq people on Kodiak lost political autonomy and their tribal sovereignty was extinguished for generations with widespread epidemics from European diseases further decimating their people.

Within Očhétí Šakówiŋ cultures, oral traditions have continuously transferred ancient knowledge from generations to generations. The practices of our oral traditions have intimately shaped profound structures for life, identity, and cultural expressions. Creation Stories honor our ancestors, emphasize our spirituality, enforce our relationships, and encourage communal values.

The expansive narratives known as "Oȟunkákáŋ" provide ancient depictions of the creation of our universe, and feature prolific spiritual relatives known as - the Wakáŋ Taŋká (a collective spiritual identity, but also individualities of ancient, natural powers & energies).

In these Creation Stories, the beginning sequence presents the eldest Wakáŋ Taŋká relatives: Iŋyáŋ (the first, rock); Maká (the earth); Škáŋ (movement); and Wí (the sun); then, Wakíŋyáŋ (thunder being); Taté (wind); Haŋwí (the moon); and Wóhpé (falling star woman), amongst others.

The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) invites you to experience a virtual tour of the exhibition, "Dynamics of Russian Colonialism in Alaska," with artist Marlena Myles.

"Dynamics of Russian Colonialism in Alaska," a solo exhibition of work by Marlena Myles, focuses on the intersection of immigrant and Native peoples in North America. These digitally created works bring to light the commonly unknown history of interactions between Russian explorers, settlers, traders, clergy, and Alaska Natives before the Alaskan territory was sold to the United States in 1867. These are important reflections, much needed in the contemporary United States and Minnesota, that acknowledge indigenous histories.

Myles will be joined by TMORA Chief Curator Dr. Masha Zavialova during this virtual presentation. There will be an opportunity for Q&A during the program. Please join us.

This is a demo of augmented reality but this summer/fall, I'll be releasing a large public AR installation called the Dakota Spirit Walk near Indian Burial Mounds park. It'll be a public art tour that honors, educates and connects visitors to Dakota history, culture and significance of land.

Augmented Reality is the perfect metaphor for Native Presence: Dakota peoples histories and stories are here, invisible at the moment to many; yet folks only need to look with new eyes at the deeper powers held here. This technology will bring that ancient knowledge into the present, for future generations to access. #augmentedreality #augmentedrealityart #MarlenaMyles
