I'm sharing this map of Indigenous place names across Lenape Manhattan (Mannahatta), which I created a couple of years ago for a New York magazine after they were impressed by my Dakota land maps of our homelands in Minnesota.

The map was intended for an Indigenous Peoples Day cover, but someone at the top decided against using it because he was worried Italian Americans would be upset about Indigenous people being celebrated instead of Columbus.

Imagine being so concerned about offending people on Indigenous Peoples Day that you decide not to recognize the original people of the land.

So I'm sharing it here instead!

If you're interested in learning more about Indigenous homelands in NYC area, check out the interactive map by @jeremynative which has a wealth of information!

For Indigenous Peoples Day, I encourage everyone to learn about the Indigenous land you're living on, the original place names, and the Native peoples whose relationships with these places continue today.

Excited to share my newest installation at the Nat

Excited to share my newest installation at the Native American Community Clinic (@nacc_healthcare) in Minneapolis! I designed the lobby mural, backlit ceiling, and terrazzo floors to bring Dakota teachings of creation, kinship, and our relationship to the cosmos into this beautiful healing space.

✨ Kapémni: From the Ancestors, Through the Stars, Into This World ✨

Inspired by Kapémni , the Dakota teaching of how the spiritual and physical worlds mirror one another, the artwork connects Bdóte, our sacred place of creation, with the stars and our ancestral teachings.

🌟 The mural features Wičháŋȟpi Thó Wiŋ (Blue Star Woman), who brings the seeds of life from the Star World, gifting us with Šičúŋ, the sacred spiritual gifts we carry throughout our lives.

🌊 The terrazzo floors below represent the flowing waters of Mní Sota Wakpá (Minnesota River) and Wakpá Tháŋka (Mississippi River), which meet at Bdóte, our sacred place of creation.

✨ The illuminated ceiling above reflects the connection between the earthly and celestial worlds, honoring the four directions, the stars, and the spiritual protection that surrounds us from the moment we enter this world.

Together, these elements remind us that our ancestors, the land, the stars, and future generations are all connected.

I'm incredibly grateful to @fullcircle_indigenous_planning and Dr. Anthony Stately for the opportunity to contribute to the healing energy of this space.

The building also features beautiful artwork by other Native artists, including murals by Natchez Beaulieu. It's wonderful to see Indigenous creativity and ancestral knowledge woven throughout a place dedicated to caring for our communities. 💙

Pidámayayapi to everyone who joined us for an unforgettable evening on Ókhižu Wakpá, the St. Croix River! What an adventure (you had to be there lol)! 🚢✨

A special thank you to Dawí Westerman and Sydney Ockenga for sharing your knowledge, stories, and teachings with everyone! And a huge thank you to @franconiamn for making this sold out experience possible and supporting opportunities to share Dakota knowledge and perspectives.

Spending time on the river felt like traveling back in time, reconnecting with the wisdom of our ancestors and discovering how Dakota teachings continue to guide us today. They offer us a way of seeing the world, a way of building kinship with the life around us, and a way of finding peace through understanding our place within it.

Our lives have been enriched by these ancestral teachings, and we're excited to share more of them with everyone at the opening of Indigenous Reverence at Franconia Sculpture Park! Join us October 18, 12-4!

Through Awareness, Understanding, and Responsibility, we invite you to explore how these teachings can transform the way we see, relate to, and care for the world around us.

The river reminded us that the past isn't something behind us. It continues to flow through us, carrying knowledge that is just as meaningful today as when our ancestors paddled these waters. 🌿💙

So thankful to spend the evening on Wakpá Tháŋka,

So thankful to spend the evening on Wakpá Tháŋka, the Mississippi River, for our final Dakota Legacy Cruise of the season. 🌙✨

It's always meaningful to sail past Bdóte, where the rivers meet and where our Dakota creation story begins, carrying our stories and teachings along the same waters that have connected our people for generations.

Our final cruise was sold out, which means we officially had a SOLD-OUT SEASON on the Mississippi River for the fourth year! 🚢

Pidámayayapi @thomasdraskovic and @fern_renville for sharing your knowledge and reminding us how Dakota stories and teachings from the past continue to guide and empower us into the future. And a huge thank you to Minneapolis Community Education @mplscommed for helping make these evenings on the river possible and to everyone who joined us throughout the season!

Tomorrow, October 8, I'll be joining Dawí Westerman and Sydney Ockenga @frankdrawings for one more special evening on the water, this time on Ókhižu Wakpá, the St. Croix River, with @franconiamn ! There is still time for a last-minute sign-up. Link in bio!

Otherwise, that's a wrap. Pidámayayapi! 💙

Pidamayaye to everyone who came out yesterday to celebrate the opening of ‘Merciless’: Indigenous Lands Since 1776 at the @weismanartmuseum and the unveiling of our new works! 🖤

I'm grateful to be part of this exhibition alongside Natchez Beaulieu and Missy Whiteman @missy_whiteman , with the exhibition curated by Dr. Kendra Greendeer. ‘Merciless’ is a commemoration and celebration of Indigenous resistance, resilience, and our enduring relationships to the lands our ancestors called home.

My outdoor installation, Ancestral Currents: From Bdóte to the Stars, came together through so many hands. Great collaboration with Natchez Beaulieu (@chezyb / @ashagistudio) for the patio mosaic design, @biotalandscapes for the hardscape installation, @fireartscenter for manufacturing my steel panel designs, and @drgreendeer & @weismanartmuseum for facilitating and supporting the project.

And thank you to everyone who came to celebrate with us, visited the work, supported the Native vendors, participated in the day's activities, and spent time learning from the artists. Seeing so many people gathered together for Indigenous art, land, story, and community made the opening incredibly special.

‘Merciless’: Indigenous Lands Since 1776 is now open at the Weisman and on view through May 16, 2027. Our outdoor piece is a permanent addition, so you can sit, gather, and learn from the river anytime. Situated alongside Wakpá Tháŋka, my installation also includes an augmented reality experience that reveals another layer of Dakota story, knowledge, and relationship to this place. ✨

So thankful to spend the evening on Wakpá Tháŋka, the Mississippi River, for our third Dakota Legacy Cruise of the season. 🌙✨

Our final cruise is already sold out, which means we officially had a sold-out season with @mplscommed ! 🥹

Pidámayayapi @thomasdraskovic and Jenna Grey Eagle @napematolakotabeadwork for sharing your knowledge, stories, and plenty of laughs as Haŋwí, the moon, watched over us. There's something special about sharing Dakota knowledge while actually moving through these homelands by water.

And @archive_pono illustrated these beautiful notes from our conversation, I needed to share their sketch with y'all! Embedded knowledge flowing through the rivers. 🌊

If you missed the Mississippi cruises, you have one more chance to join me on the water this fall! On October 8, I'll be on Ókhižu Wakpá, the St. Croix River, with my co-hosts Sydney Ockenga and Dawí Westerman. There’s still room left on that cruise, hosted by @franconiamn (link in bio)

Grateful for everyone who has joined us this season and spent time listening, laughing, learning, and seeing these rivers through Dakota ways of knowing. ❤️

Powder-coated / corten steel, augmented reality (not pictured)
Steel Fabrication by Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center

I'm excited to invite everyone to experience my new outdoor installation at the @weismanartmuseum , opening Saturday, September 26 as part of Merciless: Indigenous Lands Since 1776.

Situated beside Wakpá Tháŋka (the Mississippi River), Ancestral Currents explores Dakota relationships with the river through three interconnected teachings: Wáǧačhaŋ, the Cottonwood Tree of Life; Šičúŋ and Kapémni, our spiritual star gifts and the mirroring of worlds; and Bdóte, the sacred confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers and a place of first breath.

The installation connects land, water, stars, and ancestors, with the river understood as a living relative carrying memory across generations. I've also created an augmented reality experience that reveals additional layers of story, symbolism, and connections between the river, sky, and Dakota homelands.

The surrounding pavement was designed by Natchez Beaulieu @chezyb / @ashagistudio , extending these teachings into the ground beneath us. During our opening-day tour, Natchez will share the significance behind her pavement design while I'll share more about the teachings within my installation alongside curator @drgreendeer

Thanks to Chicago Ave @fireartscenter for bringing my digital files into physical reality!

Sneak peek of my new outdoor installation coming to the Weisman Art Museum @weismanartmuseum 👀✨

My piece is a series of cut stainless steel sculptures / seating area that bring Dakota relationships with the land, plants, stars and cosmos into the landscape surrounding the museum. The steel is being fabricated by Chicago Avenue @fireartscenter , and I'll also have augmented reality experiences that activate the sculptures and reveal additional layers of Dakota knowledge, imagery and storytelling.

The work is part of ‘Merciless’: Indigenous Lands Since 1776, curated by @drgreendeer , alongside fellow artists Natchez Beaulieu @ashagistudio and @missy_whiteman . Natchez is creating the paver/mosaic elements with assistance by @biotalandscapes and gathering space on the river-facing lawn, while Missy is creating an immersive VR, video and sculptural installation inside the museum.

I love that together our works move across land, steel, stone, digital space, VR and AR, while each offering our own relationships to this place, its histories and its Indigenous futures.

‘Merciless’ opens September 26, 2026 and runs through May 16, 2027.
